I did not go to Santa Fe specifically looking for religious themes. But like most southwestern towns of colonial Spanish descent, the integral role that Catholicism played in the melding of old European and Native American cultures, for better or for worse, is impossible to overlook. The fusion of religious symbols with the rich, undiffused lighting of the American Southwest rewarded me with some simple yet powerful compositions.
